What Is IMU CET?

IMU CET is a national-level, computer-based entrance test conducted annually by Indian Maritime University to admit students into its undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma maritime programs. It’s the primary — and for most programs, the only — route into IMU’s six directly-run campuses (Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Port, Kolkata, Kochi, Visakhapatnam) as well as most DG Shipping-approved affiliated institutes across India, including several private colleges covered elsewhere on this site.

Courses admitted through IMU CET include BSc Nautical Science, BTech Marine Engineering, BTech Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS), BBA in Shipping/Logistics, MBA in Port and Shipping Management, and MTech programs — each with its own eligibility and paper structure.

IMU CET Eligibility

For UG technical programs (BTech, BSc Nautical Science, DNS):

• Minimum 60% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in the 10+2 (or equivalent) exam
• Minimum 50% marks in English in Class 10 or Class 12
• Minimum age 17 years at the time of admission

For MBA programs (Port and Shipping Management / International Transportation and Logistics Management):

• A bachelor’s degree in any discipline, with minimum eligibility criteria specified in the official notification
• IMU CET score, or alternatively CAT, MAT, or CMAT scores are also accepted for MBA admission

For MTech programs:

• A relevant BSc/BTech/BE degree in Mechanical, Naval Architecture, or a related engineering discipline

IMU CET Syllabus

The syllabus for UG technical programs largely follows the Class 11 and 12 CBSE curriculum, split across five sections:

• Physics — mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, electricity and magnetism, modern physics
• Chemistry — physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry at 10+2 level
• Mathematics — algebra, trigonometry, calculus, coordinate geometry, statistics and probability
• English — grammar, comprehension, vocabulary
• General Aptitude — logical reasoning, numerical ability, general awareness

For MBA and MTech papers, the syllabus shifts toward quantitative aptitude, verbal ability, logical reasoning, and (for MTech) core engineering fundamentals relevant to the specific specialisation.

Application Fee

• ₹1,200 for General, General-EWS, and OBC (NCL) candidates
• ₹800 for SC/ST candidates

This fee applies to both UG and PG program applications.

How to Apply for IMU CET

1. Register online at imu.edu.in with basic personal and academic details
2. Fill out the application form, selecting your preferred program (UG technical, MBA, or MTech) and campus/city preferences
3. Pay the application fee online
4. Complete the city/exam-centre selection during the designated window
5. Download the admit card once released, ahead of the exam date
6. Appear for the exam on the scheduled date at your allotted centre

What Happens After the Exam: Counselling and Admission

1. Result and rank certificate — IMU releases an all-India rank list; each candidate can view their IMU-CET Rank Certificate through their login
2. Online counselling registration — candidates register on IMU’s counselling portal once the rank list is out
3. Choice filling — select preferred campuses and courses in order of preference; note that a counselling fee (commonly around ₹10,000, partially refundable if no seat is allotted) applies at this stage
4. Seat allotment rounds — conducted based on rank, category, and choices filled
5. Document verification and DG Shipping-approved medical fitness test
6. Fee payment to confirm the final seat

IMU CET Cutoffs

Cutoff ranks vary significantly by campus, course, category, and year — T.S. Chanakya (IMU Navi Mumbai) and IMU Chennai typically see tighter competition and higher cutoffs than IMU Visakhapatnam or Kolkata, given their stronger brand recognition. IMU CET Reserved Seats

IMU reserves a portion of seats for candidates from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands, the eight North-Eastern states, and Jammu and Kashmir, in addition to standard category reservations — a structure not typically found at private maritime institutes.

Preparation Tips

• Since the syllabus tracks CBSE Class 11/12 material closely, standard PCM textbooks remain the primary preparation resource — a dedicated new syllabus isn’t required
• Practise previous years’ IMU CET question papers to understand question difficulty and pacing across all five sections within the 3-hour window
• Because negative marking applies uniformly, avoid guessing on questions you’re genuinely unsure about — a wrong answer costs more than an unattempted one gains you nothing, but the net effect still favours informed attempts over blind guesses
• General Aptitude and English sections are often under-prepared by PCM-focused students — don’t neglect them, since they carry equal weight to the science sections
